Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the SIE exam?

The SIE exam is the Securities Industry Essentials exam created by FINRA. It’s an entry-level certification test that assesses fundamental securities industry knowledge. The exam tests your understanding of capital markets, products and risks, customer accounts, and regulatory frameworks that every securities professional needs to know.

The SIE exam is 105 minutes long (1 hour and 45 minutes). You’ll answer 75 multiple-choice questions during this time. Each question has four possible answers with only one correct choice. The exam is computer-based and administered at authorized testing centers.

The SIE exam difficulty depends on your preparation and background. With a 74% national pass rate, most candidates succeed with proper study. The exam focuses on fundamental concepts rather than complex calculations. Success comes from understanding key securities concepts, regulations, and products rather than memorization alone.

Most candidates study 40-60 hours over 2-4 weeks for the SIE exam. Your timeline depends on your financial background and study schedule. Beginners may need 80-100 hours, while those with securities experience might prepare in 20-30 hours. Consistent daily study sessions work better than cramming.

The SIE exam covers four main content areas with specific weightings:

  1. Knowledge of Capital Markets: 12 questions (16%)
  2. Understanding Products and Their Risks: 33 questions (44%)
  3. Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts, and Prohibited Activities: 23 questions (31%)
  4. Overview of the Regulatory Framework: 7 questions (9%)

The SIE exam costs $60, making it one of the most affordable FINRA exams. This fee is paid directly to FINRA when you schedule your exam. There are no additional testing center fees. If you need to retake the exam, you’ll pay $60 each time.

The SIE exam is administered at Prometric testing centers throughout the United States and internationally. You’ll schedule your exam appointment through FINRA’s website after creating a testing window. Testing centers provide a secure, proctored computer-based testing environment.

No, you cannot take the SIE exam online from home. The exam must be taken in person at an authorized Prometric testing center. All testing occurs under supervised conditions with strict security protocols to maintain exam integrity and prevent cheating.

To pass the SIE exam, you need to score at least 70%. Focus on understanding concepts rather than memorizing facts. Study all four content areas with emphasis on products and risks (44% of exam). Use practice exams to identify weak areas, review regulatory frameworks, and understand customer account types and trading procedures.

You can take the SIE exam unlimited times, but must wait 30 days after your first and second failed attempts. After a third failed attempt, you must wait 180 days before retaking. Your exam results remain valid for 4 years once you pass, giving you time to pursue additional qualifications.
